Inner core anisotropy inferred by direct inversion of normal mode spectra

چکیده
The spectra of 25 inner-core-sensitive normal modes observed following eight recent major (Mw >7.5) earthquakes are inverted for anisotropic structure in the inner core, using a one-step inversion procedure. The mode data are combined with PKP(DF)^ PKP(AB) di¡erential traveltime data and the inner core is parametrized in terms of general axisymmetric anisotropy, allowing structure beyond restrictive transversely isotropic models with radially varying strength. The models obtained are in good agreement with previous ones derived through the intermediate step of computing splitting functions. Splitting functions predicted for the inner core model determined using the one-step, direct inversion of all mode spectra agree well with those obtained from non-linear inversion of individual modes. We discuss the importance of handling the perturbation to radial isotropic structure appropriately in order to align the observed and predicted spectra properly. We examine the e¡ect of using existing tomographic mantle models to correct for mantle e¡ects on the inner core modes versus a mantle model derived by us using a relatively small number of mantle-sensitive modes, and show that the latter leads to a signi¢cantly better ¢t to the inner core data. Our ability to ¢t the inner core spectral data degrades appreciably if an isotropic layer thicker than 100^200 km is imposed at the top of the inner core.

Regional variation of inner core anisotropy from seismic normal mode observations.
Earth's solid inner core is surrounded by a convecting liquid outer core, creating the geodynamo driving the planet's magnetic field. Seismic studies using compressional body waves suggest hemispherical variation in the anisotropic structure of the inner core, but are poorly constrained because of limited earthquake and receiver distribution. Here, using normal mode splitting function measureme...
متن کاملRobust normal mode constraints on inner-core anisotropy from model space search.
A technique for searching full model space that was applied to measurements of anomalously split normal modes showed a robust pattern of P-wave and S-wave anisotropy in the inner core. The parameter describing P-wave anisotropy changes sign around a radius of 400 kilometers, whereas S-wave anisotropy is small in the upper two-thirds of the inner core and becomes negative at greater depths. Our ...
متن کاملTomographic inversion for three-dimensional anisotropy of Earth’s inner core
Seismological studies generally suggest that the Earth’s inner core is anisotropic and the anisotropic structure changes significantly both laterally and with depth. Previous body-wave studies of the inner core have relied on ray tracing or waveform modeling using one-dimensional (1D) models. Here we present non-linear tomographic inversions of the inner core anisotropy using three-dimensional ...
متن کاملRaman spectroscopy of iron to 152 gigapascals: implications for Earth's inner core
Raman spectra of hexagonal close-packed iron (varepsilon-Fe) have been measured from 15 to 152 gigapascals by using diamond-anvil cells with ultrapure synthetic diamond anvils. The results give a Gruneisen parameter gamma(0) = 1.68 (+/-0.20) and q = 0.7 (+/-0.5). Phenomenological modeling shows that the Raman-active mode can be approximately correlated with an acoustic phonon and thus provides ...
متن کاملInner-core Anisotropy and Rotation
■ Abstract This paper reviews recent research focused on the Earth’s inner core. Large inner-core traveltime anomalies and the anomalous splitting of core-sensitive free oscillations strongly suggest that the inner core is anisotropic. Initial models involved a simple, constant or depth-dependent cylindrical anisotropy at a level less than a few percent. Recent observations suggest that its eas...
